I agree that the church is not the question and it is so freeing when you realise that. As a minister of a busy but somewhat becalmed church, I have spent the last few years trying to re-imagine the structure so that we get involved in mission.
I have abondoned that policy in favour of doing mission and seeing what kind of groups might need to form as conversations occur.
we are currently doing work in Starbucks with young people and a cafe church in costa for all ages - the latter will have to change, I think, because it is very church-like.
I am trying to encourage folk to have parties at the moment, social gatherings with their neighbours - most of the congregation live on suburban streets with fairly settled neighbours - that aim to make friendships, find connections between people and see where the conversations go.
Uptake is slow, but I'm hopeful - a little sunshine would undoubtedly help!

the second activity sounds a lot like it could be part of the International Sports Coalition (ISC) -- an international sports ministry network that shares resources, ideas, strategies, etc, without an affiliation or a organization to claim ownership... other than that of the Church of Jesus Christ.

just two of the many sports activities/ministries that come together through the ISC include:
http://kidsgames.com/ and http://www.ubabalo2010.com/

Comment on The Dudley Awakening? by Saz

Hi there,

As someone who is looking into the Dudley revival and seeking more of God in my local church, I thought your article was fantastic. I do believe that what is happening over there is from God, but like you I question the wider picture.

I too have a strong commitment to social justice and a deep longing to see God break out in the values of our culture. But on the other hand, I dont think we should belittle the "private experiences", or be disappointed in this movement if it doesn't produce vast poilitical and cultural change. The way Jesus worked when he was on the earth tended to be by touching lives one at a time. He did challenge the corrupt rulers and systems around him, but in my view the biggest change came through the transformed lives of the individuals he touched.

I know that myself I have fallen into the trap of seeking revival purely through laziness - it is so much easier to pray that God will break out and go off and do His own thing without my involvement - so much easier than praying for years for my friends, than slowly taking opportunities to witness to those I know, than battling with the sin that so easily ensnares me.

I praise God for what He is doing in Dudley and beyond, and I think we should make the most of it in whatever ways we can. But I believe when we faithfully persevere and submit our hearts every day to Him, His Spirit will break out wherever we are, and significant change will come. That is what I'm praying for!!
